Abstract

Mass production and multinational activity of FIAT in Spain. The SEAT (1950-1970)

By analyzing SEAT, Spain’s leading car manufacturer, this study offers some keys of interpretation to the issues regarding the adoption of the Fordist labour organization criteria in Spain in the 1950s-1970s. In a setting where — as a result of the Francoist policy —, there were no free trade unions and the industry was protected, mass production and motorization in Spain were made possible by total technology reliance on FIAT and a cost of labour much lower than in Italy.
