Abstract

The myth of Irish nationalism and its influence of Galician, Basque and Catalan nationalism.

Nationalist movements experience along their evolution mutual interactions and influences, which usually result in a demonstration effect. The Irish national movement, and especially its evolution after the Easter Rising (1916) proved to be a very influential and dynamic factor which influenced the internal dynamics and development of Galician, Basque and Catalan nationalisms until 1936. Nevertheless, while Galician nationalism attempted to develop a kind of especial ethnie pan-celtic link with Ireland, the most radical sectors of both Basque and Catalan nationalisms assimilated the influence of the strategy of “direct action” and national rising preached by the Irish Sinn Féin.
