Abstract
The essay studies the reception and experience of constitutional Spain on the criollo mentality, through the articles published on the “Gazeta de Buenos Aires” answering the Manifiesto that King Fernando VII sent to the Americam peoples in the first months of the Trienio. These articles show how, on one hand, the paper’s editors cannot hide their feelings of sympathy towards the revolutionary principles of the 1820 upraising and, on the other, they make very clear the mistrust and suspicion fostered by them towards the monarchy’s role in the new situation, feelings which in the last instance arrive to challenge the liberal contents of the same Cádiz’ Constitution of 1812.
