Freemasonry in the Spanish Republican Exile of 1939
Spanish Freemasonry suffered intensely from the consequences of the Civil War. Some 1,200 Freemasons joined the Republican exile in 1939 and a good part of whom maintained that identity in the societies that welcomed them. Continuity initiatives have been located especially in Mexico and France. The activities of these nuclei were fundamentally oriented towards mutual aid, the maintenance of identity and the denunciation of the Franco regime. There were also important episodes of internal confrontations.
