On the Trail of the “Imperial Nation”. The Colonial Debate During the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823)
The Trienio liberal was a decisive historical conjuncture for Spanish liberalism. In parliamentary speeches as well as in the press publications, the relationship between Mother country and colonies become object of confrontation and clash useful to define and differentiate liberal political cultures too. Different proposals and forms of relationship were therefore elaborated with revolutionary territories of Ultramar. In this essay we retrace those debates as signals of a transformation and redefinition – not elimination – of the Spanish imperial culture during the 19th century.
