Abstract

The Bandit’s Metamorphosis: from Criminal to Guerrillero

The essay studies banditry in Spain from the end of the Seventeenth to the first half of the Eighteenth Century. It tries to reconstruct the bandolero’s typology and some features of the mitology of the War of Independence’s guerrilleros, trying to establish the analogies between the two characters. Both are «heroes» with strong popular support in contrast with the individualistic stance of their behaviour. The sources are the travellers’ memoirs, the pliegos de cordel and the documentary evidence found in Madrid’s Archivo Histórico Nacional.

María Victoria López Cordón Cortezo, Università Complutense di Madrid

María Victoria López-Cordón Cortezo, insegna Storia moderna presso l’Università Complutense di Madrid. Ha lavorato fondamentalmente sui temi di storia sociale e del pensiero politico del Settecento e Ottocento, con attenzione anche alla dimensione di genere. Negli ultimi anni si è dedicata ai rapporti della Spagna con l’Europa. Tra le sue pubblicazioni più recenti La idea de Europa en la España ilustrada (Segovia, 1994) e De las manos del príncipe a relojero de la monarquía (Salamanca, 1996).
