Abstract

The Spanish liberal republicanism: freedom, democracy and association in the republican thought of the XIX

This research deals with the Spanish democracy of the second half of the XIX century (1849-1874) as a variety of liberal republicanism. The study discusses how major republican personalities, especially Pi, Castelar and Garrido, managed to combine three very different political conceptions: the liberal tradition of individual rights beyond legislative regulation, the republican defence of democracy and civil virtue and the socialist association of manufacturers and consumers.
