Abstract

The Chronicle of a Nineteenth-century Disaster. The Casamicciola Earthquake in the Spanish Press

The earthquake that struck the island of Ischia in 1883 was one of the most destructive of the nineteenth century and had a significant international resonance, due to the fact that it destroyed one of the most famous spa towns at the time: Casamicciola. The newspapers informed of the incident almost immediately and the news spread in Spain in the same way as in other countries. Specifically, this article offers a study focused on the image of the tragedy spread in Spanish newspapers of the late nineteenth century.

  • Carla Fernández Martínez, Universidad de Oviedo

    Carla Fernández Martínez is professor at the Department of Art History of the Universidad de Oviedo. His lines of study focus on the conservation of heritage and the iconography of cities, the subject of the monograph "Pontevedra. Vistas y visiones de una ciudad atlántica" (2016). She recently carried out an international project on cities founded after earthquakes in collaboration with the CIRICE of the University of Naples Federico II and the Pontifical University of Chile. She has been visiting research in the CEPESE of the Universidade de Porto and the KHI of Florence.
