The Santander Bishop in the British press in 1808: an unusual coverage
Rafael Tomás Menéndez de Luarca’s actions in the first year of the Peninsular War were vital for the fate of the Santander province in the May 1808 uprising. Menéndez de Luarca was the object of attention of the British press in that year. News coverage stressed his role as representative of the Catholic clergy fully in- volved in the conflict. This also inspired a poem published on a London newspaper. This article analyzes the information on Menéndez de Luarca that appeared on the British press in 1808, as well as “The London Gazette” and The Annual Register, in order to throw light on how this personality and his behaviour were de- picted in the allied country
