Abstract

From isolation to integration. The relationship between Spain and Europe in the XXth century.

The essay starts with the discussion of “Spain as problem” and of the “two Spains” in the historiographical and literary debate; the main chapters concentrate on the different phases of Spanish intellectual history from the “generation of 1898” and the Regenerationists to Spain’s European identity today, passing through the polarization of the ideological positions in the inter-war- period and the Francoist ‘Sonderweg’, the opening by economic liberalization in the 1960s and the reintegration into the Western European mainstream in the last decades.
