Resumen

Las negociaciones para la actualización del Concordado de 1953
The Vatican II Council dealt a striking blow to the catholic confessional principie of the Spanish State, in general, and to the 1953 Concordato, in actual facts. After the request in april of 1968 to Franco by Pope Paul VI, that the Head of the Spanish State relinquish its patronate’s privilege that he had since June of 1941, a reassessment process of the Concordato was started, during which many summit meetings were needed between the Spanish Government and the Holy See. Tha last step of such reassessment, that of Pedro Cortina leading the Foreign Affairs Ministry (January 1974-December 1975), which began with a meeting in Madrid in June 1974, is discussed in this article. Other three meetings would follow, in July and December 1974 and March 1975, but all of them proved unsuccessful. The Concordato would actually be demolished.
