Between Italy and Spain: Mazzini, Garrido, Díaz y Pérez
The essay deals with Mazzini, Garrido, Pi y Margall, Díaz y Pérez through the usually direct comparisons that emerge from their writings and their actions. The position of Pi y Margall (author of the prologue to the Mazzini biography written by Díaz y Pérez) obviously focuses on the centralism/federalism axis. The distinction is more subtle with respect to Garrido: Mazzini undoubtedly has collaborative relations with him, but Garrido is, in his manner, a socialist writer (while the Genoese is a critic of socialism in all its forms). The biography of Díaz y Pérez, intends to act as a praise of Mazzini, although it reflects a republican-radical political culture that overlaps the religious-communitarian model of the Genoese. Among other things, Díaz y Pérez attributes to Víctor Hugo the narration of a meeting between
Cavour and Mazzini. It is a page taken from an anonymous book and that narrates an event that never happened, but that is welcomed, and perhaps even believed, in some political and cultural circles of the time.
