Church and Repression of Freemasonry During the First Francoism. New Insights
The repressive apparatus set up by General Franco shortly after he took power had one of its main targets in Freemasonry – right from the Civil War itself. It is generally believed, and widely reiterated by the traditional historiography, that the Church’s participation in this repressive action was very significant, both because of the traditional anti-Masonic position of the clerical world and because of the role it was beginning to play in the new Francoist State. A careful study of the legislation put in place at the time and, above all, consultation of the abundant documentation that exists on the subject, which in some cases is quite scattered, allows us to qualify and even modify the interpretation that has been defended until now.
