Abstract

«So we became antifascists». Vasco Pratolini and Elio Vittorini facing the Spanish Civil War

For Vasco Pratolini and Elio Vittorini, increasingly disappointed by fascism after a youthful and committed adhesion, the Spanish Civil War represented an existential inflection point that changed their lives, directing them towards a conscious choice of the anti-fascist camp. It was not an easy or even linear path, but for them and for many other young Italians, the Spanish tragedy paved the way for a profound change and the possibility of fighting fascist totalitarianism, because Spain became a symbol for the 20th century, as 1848 had been for the previous century.

Marco Novarino insegna Storia contemporanea nell’Università di Torino.
