Assault, massacre and looting: the Italian army against the defense of Catalonia in the Guerra de la Independencia
This article has the objective to study the contribution (important both quantitatively and qualitatively) given by the army of the napoleonic Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814) in the invasion of Catalogna during the Peninsular War. The research, based on the documentation of the Secrétairerie d’état impériale, the French Ministère de la Guerre and the Italian Ministero della Guerra, has permit to reconstruct the complex Spanish defensive plans of the region and the countermeasures put in place by the Imperial Army (composed of Italian and French troops) in order to complete the occupation of Catalonia. It was thus possible to ascertain the operational and organizational peculiarities that made Italian Corps particularly suited to this conflict.
