Abstract

Preparation and Debate of the Constitution of 78

The results of the June 15, 1977 election turned the Parliament into constituent assembly. The paper analyzes the process of elaboration of the Spanish 1978 Cons- titution with a special attention to the parliamentary debates on its most important aspects and on the most controversial ones. The interest is also knowing the different positions held by the main political groups and the agreements finally reached. The final comprehensive agreement was the result of a broad debate in which everything was discussed, from the form of government to the concept of the Spanish nation, from the rights and freedoms guaranteed to the economic and social models that could have a place in the Magna Carta.

Pere Ysàs è professore ordinario di Storia contemporanea presso l’Università Autonoma di Barcellona (UAB) nel Dipartimento di Storia Moderna e Contem- poranea. Coordinatore del programma di dottorato in Storia comparata, politica e sociale, la sua carriera di ricerca si concentra sulla storia sociale e politica dell’era franchista e sulla transizione e il consolidamento della democrazia suc- cessiva, nel quadro delle dittature e delle transizioni alla democrazia XX secolo. Le linee di ricerca sono: il regime franchista, i gruppi sociali e le condizioni di vita, l’antifranchismo, i movimenti sociali e il conflitto, il processo di cambia- mento politico e la democrazia parlamentare configurati nella Costituzione del 1978.
