Abstract
Variaciones sobre un tema goethiano: “Ocios de españoles emigrados” (1824-1827)
Whilst exiled in London, a group of liberal Spaniards, inspired by Goethe’s ideal of cultural «imperialism», created a literary magazine in co-operation with the publisher Ackermann. He aimed to conquer the book market of the recently emancipated Spanish colonies, whilst the writers, Spanish intellectuals and politicians, confident of culture’s mediating capacity, meant to bridge the wide gap opened between metropolitan and American Spaniards.
