Race and pedagogy. Inspector Heriberto Ramón Alvarez and the Francoist colonial teaching in Guinea (1938-1949)
The article analyzes the educational reform and the formation of native elites developed in the Spanish colony of Guinea by the teacher Heriberto Ramón Alvarez between 1939 and 1949. It also analyzes his ideas on the black ‘race’ and its culture, the need for radical assimilation to the European Catholic and the Francoist Spanish civilization, his defense of pedagogy against biological determinism, which was very popular among colonial sectors. Finally, the essay sketches the evolution of Alvarez’s thinking during post-WW2 decolonization.
