Abstract

Formenteran and Ibizan emigration to Cuba in the 19th and 20th centuries through bibliographic and archive sources

The essay reconstructs the characteristics of the migratory flow from the island of Formentera to Cuba between the 19th and 20th centuries through the use of bibliographic sources and the proposal of personal statistical elaborations based on data collected by Jaume Verdera Verdera between 1993 and 2000. A rare documentary and iconographic source kept at the Arxiu Històric d’Eivissa, the Libro Registro de Emigración Año de 1920, 21, 22 y 24, representing the island’s migration to Cuba and, more generally, to Latin America, is also analysed and presented.

Martino Contu è ricercatore e rappresentante legale del Centro Studi SEA di Villacidro, Istituto italiano di ricerca storica e archivistica associato a Clacso (Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales). Dal 2011 è direttore responsabile della rivista scientifica “Ammentu. Bollettino Storico e Archivistico del Mediterraneo e delle Americhe”. Risulta autore di numerosi saggi di storia contemporanea e di storia dell’emigrazione insulare mediterranea diretta in America Latina tra Ottocento e Novecento. Tra i suoi numerosi contributi, si segnalano i recenti L’emigrazione italiana in Uruguay attraverso le fonti consolari (1857-1865), Cagliari, 2017; Gramsci in Costa Rica (a cura di), Cagliari, Aipsa, 2017.
