Francoist rhetoric and propaganda in the Spanish Civil War: a topological analysis
This study examines some of the speeches given by Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War and tries to identify their underlying tópoi in order to clearly outline the building blocks of Franco’s linguistic coding. The analysis shows that the Civil War propaganda hinges on few elements, basic concepts are rather elementary, the lexicon, rhetorical devices and graphic representation rely on few well-defined tópoi, which reflect the tópoi of that time: the topos of faith, of the heroism of one’s own front and the demonization of the enemy.
