Abstract

Government tourism propaganda in Spain. Beginnings and first use of the cinema (1928-1931)

This study, based on primary sources, analyzes the aims of Patronato Nacional del Turismo, established in 1928, the means used to achieve them, and the difficulties posed by the situation in Spain. The article focuses on the use of the movies in turistic advertising. The movies, which were already a form of mass entertainment, are useful to sell an attractive image of the country: difference and exoticism are sought and thus national stereotypes are created which are to bear significant future repercussions, as well.
