This study examines the diplomatic relations between the Low Countries and the two warring parties during the Spanish Civil War, focusing on an unparalleled event in the history of international relations: the granting of mass political asylum. Although the Low Countries were regarded as a second-rate power, both the Republican and the Francoist government tried to obtain political and economic support from this country, which remained as neutral throughout three years of the war as its national interests required.
