Garibaldi in Spanish republican ideologies
The post-1848 Italian events were looked at with significant interest in Spain and Garibaldi is a unifying and exemplary reference for a very wide spectrum of ideal positions and political movements. However, in terms of actual political cooperation, what is really vital is the relationship with the leading personalities from the republican movement. The article deals with the evolution of Garibaldi’s image in the web of relationships with contemporary intellectuals and politicians: Sixto Cámara, Díaz y Pérez, Garrido, and then Castelar who in his Recuerdos de Italia keenly identifies some salient features of Garibaldi. The last section of the article covers the early XX century, when Garibaldi was evoked (in a different framework and with totally new aims) by A. Lerroux and Ortega y Gasset.
