German-Spanish Cultural and Scientific Exchanges During the Weimar Republic
After the First World War, Germany intensified its foreign cultural policy with the countries that had remained neutral during the conflict, which in the first place motivated a greater cultural exchange with Spain in the interwar period. This article reviews the Spanish-German relations in the different stages between 1919 and 1933-1936, from the priority of cultural policy to recover a damaged image after the defeat, to a lively scientific exchange and the influence that the German university exerted on the Spanish in the legal and pedagogical fields. In Spain, a progressive spirit of attention to the exterior and the search for models to learn from or to exchange their own creations are observed at the same time. In this context, the activities of Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios and Residencia de Estudiantes stand out. The political changes that took place in Spain in 1931 and in Germany in 1933 gave a new direction to the orientation of the foreign cultural policy of both countries.
