Emma Barzini’s Spanish Civil war
Emma Barzini was the daughter of Luigi Barzini, a famous journalist — later senator of the Reign of Italy — and worked with him for the New York newspaper “Corriere d’America” (1923-1931). Emma experienced the Spanish Civil war in the Republican territory because she was married to a colonel of the aviation who found himself fighting against Franco, thus running the risk of being shot and spending some years in prison. The article analyzes Emma Barzini’s account, published in three episodes on “Corriere della Sera”, a few days after her adventurous repatriation, and stresses its unrestrained propaganda tone and the declaration of Fascist allegiance it contains, which culminated into her return to Francoist Spain.
