1808, an inconvenient revolution
The rising in the spring of 1808 was an exceptional event, which could not be anticipated by Napoleon, the European capitals or the Spanish élites, and which is still a source of controversy among historians. The huge and general response of the people can only be understood in the context of the crisis that had been affecting Spain for years and which became more acute after the autumn of 1807. Unlike the Mutinity of Aranjuez, it cannot be explained as an aristocratic conspiracy but, rather, as a true revolution resulting from deep social discontent. All the publications that have appeared during the celebration of its bicentenary allow for a better understanding of the event, although there are still many aspects open for research.
