The Phalangist party and contemporary art in early Francoism
The positions of the Phalangist party as regards Spanish contemporary art from the start of the Civil War to 1951 changed from the initial objective to boost Phalangist art, to the acceptance of modern bourgeois art, which was by no means on the vanguard. Before the end of the war, Phalangists theorized the features of new — Fascist — art for the New Spain. Artists created militant works for political propaganda purposes using the languages of contemporary art, derived from Cubism and Surrealism. The illustration of books and periodic publications was the artistic field where Phalangist art developed most. As Francoism consolidated and Phalangist party power and influence waned in state apparatus, militant works of art gradually disappeared. Twelve years after the end of the war the pretension of the part of the most educated sector of the Phalangist party to create a Fascist artistic style turned out to be impossible.
