Abstract

Organic Intellectuals? The Associations of Housewives and the Debate on the Role of Women as Active Consumers and Citizens (Spain 1963-1982)

This article presents the history of housewife associations during the last decade of Francoism and the Transition to Democracy in Spain. The concept of “organic intellectuals” (coined by the Italian thinker Antonio Gramsci) is used to study the role of activists who called themselves, first and foremost, housewives and consumers. The intent is to keep track of how the different associations that mobilized Spanish housewives represented the daily reality of their lives.
