Abstract

Alghero, the Little Barcelona, a Tourist Town between Italy and Spain

Alghero, a historic city in north-western Sardinia, is a well-known tourist resort that still retains the linguistic and architectural influences of Catalan domination. Having developed as one of the main tourist centers since the Second World War, it has been able to preserve its distinctive features for accommodation purposes. The article intends to investigate, through the analysis of bibliographic and printed sources, how tourism originated and developed in the city and what role its Catalan tradition has played over the years in promoting tourism. Notably, we will focus on the various tourist-cultural initiatives involving Catalan participation and Alghero.
