Imitating De Gaulle: General Armada and the Coup d’État of 23-F
This article examines the involvement of Major General Alfonso Armada Comyn in the coup d’état that took place in Spain on 23 February 1981, known as 23-F. This operation culminated a process known as the “Parallel Transition”. Conservative businessmen and politicians and a sector of the Armed Forces were involved in its implementation. The objective was to transform Spain into a limited democracy by modifying the Constitution of 1978 in a conservative direction. This research explains the causes that originated this dynamic and its development between 1977 and 1981. It also analyses the reasons that led General Armada to join this group and lead it, setting in motion the “Solución Armada”, also known as the “De Gaulle Plan”.
